Abstract

When learning a language, especially English, students must understand the culture of that language to avoid language shock and culture shock. understand the culture of that language to avoid language shock and culture shock. In addition, understanding the cultural studies of the language can also provide a broader picture of the language being studied. Language and culture can be learned through classroom activities and learning materials such as textbooks. One of the textbooks containing cultural elements is the English language textbook for seventh grade in junior high school entitled ‘English for Nusantara’, published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The aim of this study is to find out what cultural identity content is conveyed by the authors of English language textbooks in schools, especially English language textbooks for seventh grade Kurikulum Merdeka entitled 'English for Nusantara’. This study is a content analysis study using the qualitative method as an approach. This research data was collected through document analysis. The findings in this research are, the author of this textbook presents local culture in various ways that reflect Indonesian culture, such as names of people, places, food, symbols, clothing, and various kinds of art, both in the form of images and text. Most source culture data appear as product dimensions. The practice and community dimensions are also noted as source culture categories, but there are not many of them, while the perspective dimension is not found in the source culture category in this textbook. The authors also include the target culture in several aspects, such as a person's name, food, and activity habits in the life of the target culture. Likewise, in international culture, the author includes several cultural target contents in several aspects, such as community figures, daily life, place names, and artifacts. The target and international culture categories give rise to the same dimensions, with a total of three dimensions, namely product, practice, and person dimensions.
