Abstract

This study examines the attitudes of junior high school students in Tasikmalaya towards the use of English in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with four seventh-grade students and the data were analyzed by using thematic analysis. A descriptive case study was the research design of this study. The findings indicate that students generally have positive attitudes towards using English, showing enthusiasm and satisfaction when communicating in English. The use of English also enhances student engagement in-group cooperation. However, some students experience difficulties in understanding grammar and vocabulary and feel anxious about making mistakes. These challenges highlight the need for targeted teaching strategies to address language comprehension issues and reduce student anxiety. For future research, it is recommended to explore the attitudes of EFL students across regular classes using suitable methodologies conducive to actionable insights for participants. Keywords: students’ attitudes, target language, EFL classroom
