Abstract

Effective English teachers play an important role in supporting the effectiveness of the learning process. Students’ motivation to learn English can be influenced by the characteristics of the teachers who teach them, which ultimately impacts their learning achievement. Therefore, this study aims to investigate students’ preferences for effective English teachers’ characteristics in the EFL context. The research method used a descriptive case study. Participants consisted of four students at a senior high school in Tasikmalaya. Data collection used semi structured interviews. Data analysis used thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). The results showed that participants had preferences for several characteristics of effective English teachers. Participants preferred teachers with good personality and interpersonal skills, such as being humorous, friendly, helpful, and fair. Participants also preferred teachers with high English proficiency, especially speaking skills and pronunciation. Then, participants preferred teachers with effective teaching abilities, such as the application of effective motivational strategies and pedagogical practices as well as balanced use of native and target languages. Participants also preferred teachers’ professional utilization of teaching media such as slide presentations, online quizzes, and movies. Thus, English teachers and student teachers can use the findings of this study as a guide to develop personal qualities, knowledge, and teaching skills that are more effective in achieving a successful English learning process in the classroom. Then, students can also consider the characteristics of effective English teachers as a guide when selecting a teacher in an English course to improve their motivation and learning achievement. Keywords: Effective English teachers’ characteristics, EFL contexts, students’ preferences.
