Abstract
Speaking English nowadays is an essential communication skill that can give and receive information, ideas, and thoughts and express feelings with other people around the world. Additionally, the use of film reviews in the classroom can help students practice their speaking skills by reviewing what they have watched and can help them feel enthusiastic about speaking English. The students did roleplay through various activities, one of them being a content creator by reviewing a film. Therefore, this research investigates the students’ perceptions when using film review activities in learning English speaking. The research design used a descriptive case study in this research. Three participants are involved in this study: students of the English Education Department of the academic year 2020 who have enrolled in a speaking class. This study used semi-structured interviews as the data collection and analyzed thematically. The findings showed positive perceptions of using film review activities to enhance students’ speaking skills: (1) students’ learning engagement, (2) improvement in speaking skills, and (3) flexibility and simplicity of the learning activity. It is shown that film review activities could be suitable to make students engage and participate in the project. However, students encountered several challenges, such as pronunciation errors, repeated practice, and difficulty finding suitable information for the audience.
