Abstract

This study explores silent behavior in the EFL classroom context. Students' silence becomes a common problem for the student's teachers' interaction. In an educational context, students' silence can hinder effective learning and participation in the classroom. This study investigates the factors affecting students' silence in the EFL classroom from the student's perception. This study also seeks solutions or strategies to break students' silence in the learning process. The research is a case study, and semistructured interviews were used to collect the data. A semi-structured interview was conducted with four students and one female teacher. The garnered data is analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings of this research indicate four factors that influence students' silence in the classroom: psychological factors, Linguistic factors, Cognitive factors and pedagogical factors. Besides, this research also found three teaching strategies that can be applied to break students' silence: game-based learning, group presentations, and motivating students. Keywords: Students' silence, teaching strategies, EFL Classroom
