Abstract
Online learning relies heavily on the use of technology as a medium of learning. It obtains the goals of learning by achieving them through technology interactions. This online learning phenomenon causes several issues, particularly among first-year college students. They do not feel like university students because they take lessons at home. The present study aims to explore first year undergraduate students’ identities as university students in online learning. In this study, the researcher used a descriptive case study as the research design. There were four participants, they were in their second year which already have undertaken online learning for about two semesters in a Higher Education, in Tasikmalaya. The data were collected using semi-structured interviews. Then, the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Based on the result, the researcher found that there are two main themes in this study. The factors; environment change, interests and motivations, learning experience, peer social interaction, and resulting in their students’ identities change. Their identity was shaped the themes. Based on the findings of this study, participants stated how their identities have altered. The participants' statements were sorted into two categories. Most of them said of feeling nothing and seeing no discernible difference. Their new environment did not contribute to their identity development. The way they bring themselves, their attitudes, behaviors, motivations, communication, and knowledge did not make significant shift in their new identity as university students. They were stuck with their previous identities. They had failed developing a sense of self as a student, including how they perceived themselves as a student, feeling like a student, having a sense of responsibility, and accepting their identity as a student. Keywords: identity, online learning, student’s identity
