Abstract

Intelligible pronunciation is the goal of current pronunciation learning, especially for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Despite the shift from aiming for native-like pronunciation to intelligible pronunciation, the teaching and learning of intelligible pronunciation in EFL still needs to be researched. This research aims to provide comprehensive insight into intelligible pronunciation, as well as challenges and solutions in teaching and learning pronunciation in the classroom in Indonesia. This research involved four participants: one teacher and three students. This research design uses a descriptive case study, and the data collection method used is semi-structured interviews; then, the data is analyzed using thematic analysis. This research revealed two main themes: (1) Challenges in teaching and learning English Pronunciation for EFL, and (2) Teacher and student solutions to overcome challenges in learning English Pronunciation for EFL. The findings indicated that participants faced challenges from themselves, their environment, and external factors such as limited facilities and time constraints in pronunciation teaching and learning as EFL learners. However, the solutions participants use in overcoming challenges also make it easier for teachers and students to carry out pronunciation learning activities effectively. Recognizing the obstacles teachers and students encounter in teaching and learning pronunciation is crucial to enhancing the effectiveness of pronunciation teaching. It is hoped that future research will comprehensively explore the teaching and learning of pronunciation in EFL more broadly and cover all levels of education, providing a more inclusive understanding of the difficulties experienced in EFL pronunciation. Keywords: Challenges and Solutions for Teaching and Learning Pronunciation in EFL, Intelligible Pronunciation, Teaching Intelligible Pronunciation, Learning Intelligible Pronunciation.
