Abstract

English conversational classes are offered by language courses to help students improve their speaking and communication skills in English. In the learning process, behavioral involvement is important because it influences learning outcomes, as well as in English conversation classes. This study aims to investigate and provide evidence of students' behavioral engagement in English conversation practices in an English course. This research was conducted at an English course located in Garut, West Java. The data collection methods used in this research were non-participant observation and semi-structured interviews. This research involved five students and an English conversation class tutor to be observed, then one of the students was interviewed. This research uses thematic analysis to analyze the data that has been collected. The research results show that four themes are the findings of this research. Second, language exposure which includes 1) expressing unknown words, and 2) repeating new words. Third, personal development which involves 1) confidence. Fourth, adherence is shown through 1) following the rules, and 2) respecting time limit. Keywords: Behavioral engagement, conversational practices, English course
