Abstract

This research aims to understand the challenges that pre-service English teachers must face during the internship process, as well as the solutions found to overcome these challenges. In collecting data, this research involved two pre-service English teachers who had carried out teaching practicums at vocational high schools in Tasikmalaya. Data was collected through diaries and semi-structured interviews, and then analyzed using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). The research results show four challenges experienced by pre-service English teachers during internships: (1) barrier to adapting learning methods, (2) low student motivation, (3) limited learning resources, and (4) obstacles linked to personal factors. Apart from that, four things were also found that emerged as solutions to the challenges faced previously, namely: (1) understanding students for adjusting learning methods, (2) boosting student motivation, (3) tapping into alternative learning resources, and 4) teacher wellbeing and professional development support. At the end of the discussion, this study discusses suggestions for further research to expand this issue with investigations of more diverse research participants to obtain a more comprehensive understanding.
