Abstract
Note-taking is collecting necessary information from the subject that will or has been learned through creating the note. Students in university should develop this habit because there are numerous advantages to note-taking strategies when learning, particularly in foreign languages, such as English for non-majored students. Non-majored English students frequently struggle to understand during English class due to language differences with the L1 they normally use in society. This study explores the kind of note-taking strategy that non-major English students use and their perceptions of note-taking during English classes in higher education. The research design used in this study is a qualitative descriptive case study. The data were taken from the document analysis results and the interviews with the nonmajor English students who were learning English in higher education using a notetaking strategy. Four kinds of note-taking are found: (1) Outline, (2) Chart, (3) Sentence, and (4) Mind mapping note-taking and two themes of perceptions, namely: (1) the positive impact of learning English through note-taking and (2) note-taking is a student’s learning style were found. This study is expected to provide insights into how note-taking helps students understand the materials in the learning process and give them satisfaction in obtaining learning outcomes, particularly in English courses. Keywords: Note-taking Strategy, students’ perception, non-majored English students.
