Abstract

Indonesian EFL Student Teachers are expected to become English teachers when they graduate. Interestingly, several Indonesian EFL Student Teachers are more interested in teaching Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA). This research aims to describe the motivation of Indonesian EFL Student Teachers in teaching Indonesian to Foreign Speakers (BIPA). The research method uses descriptive case study. Participants consisted of two students majoring in English Education at an Indonesian international university located in the Riau Islands, Indonesia. Research data was collected using semi-structured interviews via Zoom meetings. Data were analysed using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) and based on the types of motivation explained in the Self-Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2000). Research findings revealed that participants had both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsically, the participants felt happy, comfortable, and inherently satisfied with the process of teaching Indonesian to foreign speakers. Extrinsically, the participants have the motivation to carry out intercultural communication in order to gain experience speaking with foreign speakers and want to promote Indonesian language and Indonesian culture.
