Abstract

A language learning strategy means implementing a plan to achieve goals. This study aims to find out how gender differences can determine students' strategies for learning public speaking. The researcher used a descriptive case study as the research design. The participants involved four students in the fifth semester at one of the state universities in Tasikmalaya (two female and two male students) who had taken public speaking class. The data were collected using semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The study found seven language learning strategies in the Public Speaking course, namely 1) The strategy of learning preparation, 2) The strategy of cognitive process in speaking, 3) The strategy of utilizing various learning media 4) The strategy of speaking practice, 5) The strategy in psychological management, 6) The strategy of avoiding linguistic barriers, 7) The strategy reflection. These findings show that gender differences can also influence the selection of language learning strategies in public speaking classes according to their interests and preferences. Although female and male students generally use the same strategies, they apply different activities for each strategy. This study is helpful for students, especially in terms of selecting strategies suitable to use in learning public speaking based on their gender. Meanwhile, the benefit for lecturers is that they can provide a more effective way and strategy to teach public speaking to students based on gender. Keywords: gender differences, language learning strategies, public speaking class.
