Abstract

Extensive reading has proven to be important for students in improving everyday skills, such as understanding texts more quickly, enriching vocabulary, and improving critical and analytical thinking. These skills are beneficial not only in academic contexts but also in everyday life, as they allow students to process information more efficiently and think more deeply. Using a narrative research approach, this study involved one participant, a university student, who had a consistent novel reading habit. Data for this study was collected through diaries and semi-structured video interviews from the participant and people close to the participant. After that, it was analyzed using narrative analysis theory. The results showed that the novel reading hobby not only improved relevant academic skills, but also helped the participant in dealing with time management challenges in extensive reading courses, which often require the ability to read and analyze long texts in a limited amount of time. From this study, it was found that a consistent novel reading habit directly contributed to the improvement of participants' extensive reading skills, such as reading comprehension, writing skills, and vocabulary acquisition, as well as better time management when facing a dense volume of academic reading. Keywords: English Foreign Language, Novel, Extensive Reading
