Abstract
Mastering English writing skills can be challenging for Indonesian learners since English is not the first language. The primary reason for this practical is that students faced various problems in their writing skills. However, it could be more complicated when students write collaboratively. Therefore, this qualitative research investigated the writing problems experienced by EFL Students during collaborative writing in an Academic Reading and Writing (henceforth, ARW) course at a university in Tasikmalaya. Through a descriptive case study approach and semi-structured interviews with four third-year students who wrote collaboratively in the ARW course, the thematic analysis revealed two main themes: students’ micro and macro writing problems during collaborative writing. The micro writing problems include (1) inadequate vocabulary, (2) stylistic inconsistency, and (3) grammar mistakes. Meanwhile, the macro writing problems include (1) idea development problems, (2) incoherent sentences, (3) citation problems, and (4) text structure problems. It highlights the importance of both micro and macro skills in collaborative writing. The varying levels of familiarity with these writing skills among group members hinder outcomes and complicate the process, leading to misunderstandings, time-consuming revisions, ambiguity, and reduced readability. Keywords: Problems in Writing, Micro-Macro Skills of Writing, EFL Students, Collaborative Writing.
