Abstract

Role-play is implemented as a classroom activity in higher education to engage the students in listening and speaking activities. In implementing role-play, students faced several challenges and made solutions to overcome those challenges. This study aims to investigate the students’ challenges and solutions while implementing role-play activities in the Professional Listening and Speaking course. This study was conducted at a university located in Tasikmalaya, West Java. This study involved four English Education Department students, who have passed the Professional Listening and Speaking course. The data collection method used in this study was semi-structured interviews. The result of this study found that the participants experienced six challenges that have been solved by the different solutions. These are; (1) complex topics solved by building knowledge through various references and sources; (2) contradictory roles with the player's character solved by aligning the roles; (3) practice schedule with the group solved by coordinating the technical and schedule practice; (4) limitation time of performance solved by maximizing performance within the time limit; (5) forgotten script solved by improvising when forgetting the script; and (6) nervousness solved by managing nervousness during the performance.
