Abstract

ABSTRACT FENI ANGGRAENI MUCHTAR. 2023. “EXPLORING STUDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS ON THE USE OF READING LOG IN INTENSIVE READING CLASS AT THE EFL CONTEXT.” English Education Department. Faculty of Educational Sciences and Teachers‟ Training. Siliwangi University. Tasikmalaya. Reading is one of the English skills which had to be mastered. At the university level, students need to read as often as possible to explore the materials which are related to their major. Students are expected to read actively even though they are not assigned by lecturers to read. The reading text could improve their knowledge about the subject being studied and makes them ready to enter the real professional world later after they graduate from university. However, contrary to that fact, the students of one of the universities in Tasikmalaya. They experience difficulties in reading text, such as lack of vocabulary and low motivation they face when they read in intensive reading class. Therefore, in supporting the process of learning, media are needed to train the students’ reading skills such as completing reading log. Hence, this research was conducted to see the students’ perception of the use of reading logs in an intensive reading class. There is one research problem addressed in this study; What are the students’ perceptions of the use of reading logs in an intensive reading class at a University in Tasikmalaya? The researcher employed theories from experts that can answer the research questions, namely Perception, and reading log. The theories from Walgito (2010), Taschow (1985), Leipzig (2001), and Lyutaya (2011), were reviewed to help the researcher to find out the relationship with the research results. Data collection of this study used interviews with four students who had taken intensive reading class and completed the reading log. Analysis of the data used thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). Based on the results of data analysis, researchers concluded with two themes. The first theme is the perception of the benefits of using reading logs which illustrates the benefits of using complete reading logs. Most of the participants agreed that reading logs could increase their vocabulary, support their reading skills, increase their reading interest and motivation, and help them to evaluate their reading skills. The second is the perception that filling in the reading log should be able to use a more practical platform. Keywords: perception, reading, reading log.
