Abstract

Teaching as a process of knowledge transmission must be inclusive and adaptive to accommodate different types of students, including those with special educational needs such as emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD). The learning ability of EBD students in English classes provides many challenges that must be solved well by teachers. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the challenges faced by English teachers in teaching EBD students and the strategies used to solve those challenges. In this study, the researcher used a descriptive case study as a research design. The participant consisted of one English teacher at a secondary school in Sukamanah, Tasikmalaya. The data were collected using semi-structured interviews and participant documents. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of the study resulted in three themes that include challenges and strategies in teaching English to EBD students. The results are: (1) teacher’s challenges related to EBD student; (2) teacher’s challenges related to teaching and support; and (3) teachers' strategies in teaching English to EBD students. Based on the results of the analysis, the researcher concluded that teaching English to EBD students requires adequate knowledge about the student's profile as an EBD. Furthermore, the strategies used by the teacher were adjusted to the challenges he faced and needed to be developed so that EBD students have the opportunity to develop their English skills. Keywords: English language teaching, EBD students, teaching challenges and strategies, regular schools
