Abstract

The development of Web 2.0 technologies and social media has brought significant changes in education, providing opportunities for educators and students to utilize platforms such as YouTube in the learning process. One application of social media in education is project-based learning. This research aims to explore the opportunities and challenges in working on YouTube video projects as English speaking tasks. Therefore, this research focuses on the opportunities and challenges of YouTube video projects in a Professional Listening and Speaking (PLS) course at a university in Tasikmalaya. Students are required to create and upload speaking task videos on YouTube to practice their speaking skills. The study used a descriptive case study with semi-structured data collection methods through interviews to explore in depth the opportunities and challenges faced by students in completing their English video projects. Then, the data was then analyzed using thematic analysis. The results showed that the project provided opportunities for students to develop their creativity, self-confidence, speaking skills, and collaborative group work. However, there were also significant challenges in script writing, technical video-making skills, pronunciation, group time management, and different opinions between the members. In conclusion, the project provided a learning experience for students that honed their creativity, language and collaboration skills and taught them perseverance and adaptability to the challenges of project-based learning.
