Abstract

The use of the chain story technique in the context of creative writing can be a valuable tool in fiction writing. Therefore, the use of the chain story technique can be considered as an alternative method to improve students’ interest, motivation and ability to write fiction stories. This research aims to explore the students’ experiences of using the chain story technique during writing practice in a Creative Writing course. The method used was a descriptive case study. The participants consisted of 4 students in the English Education Department at a university in Tasikmalaya. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). The results showed that five themes that described students’ experiences of using chain story technique, namely: (1) utilizing chain story technique in writing practice; (2) improving grammar and vocabulary; (3) improving imaginative thinking in fiction story writing; (4) challenges in using chain story technique; and (5) emotional experiences. The students' experiences using the chain story technique showed that it helped them improve their language skills and imaginative thinking and motivated them to write creatively. Students also faced some challenges in the process of the chain story activity, there are challenges with consistency and limited time given. Thus, teachers can consider using the chain story technique in learning activity, particularly for writing practice. However, the strategy is needed to overcome the challenges faced by the students.
