Abstract

In teaching English-speaking skills, teachers usually use various learning techniques to attract students' attention and interest so that students are actively involved in the learning process. One of the learning techniques used is roleplaying. In practice, this technique is used in professional listening and speaking courses. Based on statements from teachers and several students, they claim that role play influences student engagement, especially behaviorally and cognitively. Seeing this phenomenon, this qualitative research aims to investigate student engagement during English-speaking learning through role-plays in the Professional Listening and Speaking course among students majoring in English Language Education at a university in Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia. Using a descriptive case study research design and thematic analysis, data was collected through semi-structured interviews with two participants. The findings of this study showed that the participants engaged behaviorally, cognitively, and emotionally while learning to speak through role plays. These were demonstrated by (1) timely commitment among students and (2) students‘ participation in roleplays, which refers to behavioral engagement. (3) Boosting students‘ English language learning motivation; (4) Enhancing student‘s English proficiency; (5) Utilizing cognitive and metacognitive language learning strategies, which refer to cognitive engagement; (6) Students‘ emotional dynamics in role-plays; (7) Students‘ well-being, which refers to emotional engagement. Hopefully, this research can contribute to enriching knowledge about the use of role play in English-speaking learning, especially about student engagement.
