Abstract
In Indonesia, learning English as a foreign language (EFL) still encounters several problems, especially regarding speaking skills which affect English language ability. Strategies or methods are needed to improve speaking skills to make learning easier. This research examines the strategies students use to improve their speaking skills. The research method used is a descriptive case study. The participants were three students taking a course in Kampung Inggris Pare, East Java. The data were collected by using semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed by thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2008). The researcher categorized research findings into six themes. These were; 1) Storing vocabularies to maintain speaking performance; (2) Comprehending the subject matter for flowy speaking; (3) Generating relevant sentences to express the same meaning; (4) Planning and organizing the speaking performance; (5) Regulating and controlling emotion; (6) Supportive environment. Based on the result of the data analysis, the researcher found that participants implemented various learning strategies to improve speaking skills, namely making long sentences, memorizing vocabulary, understanding the topic, analyzing mistakes, making synonymous sentences, rereading the speaking material, imitating native speaker, body language, selfconfident, controlling nervousness, asking for help selectively, and always use English language. Therefore, the researcher recommended students significantly improve their speaking skills by understanding and implementing appropriate learning strategies.
