Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum is the latest curriculum currently in use but not all schools have implemented the curriculum. Therefore, in its implementation, especially in English subjects, it is very important for English teachers to know what challenges there are when implementing the Merdeka Curriculum. The purpose of this study is to find out the challenges faced by English teachers when implementing the Merdeka Curriculum. This research used a descriptive case study. The participants consisted of two English teachers in a junior secondary school in Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia. Data collection used thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). Based on the results of data analysis, researchers found that teachers have challenges when implementing the Merdeka Curriculum, namely lack of information about the Merdeka curriculum, lack of training for English teachers, limited learning tools, lack of adequate books for learning, and students who have low motivation in learning English. The researcher categorized the research findings into three themes. These themes are; (1) Inadequate training and support for teachers; (2) Lack of resources and infrastructure; (3) Students have low motivation. Therefore, the researcher concluded that teachers have several challenges in implementing the Merdeka curriculum when implementing the Merdeka Curriculum in English subjects. The implication of this research is to provide references and considerations for English teachers when they want to implement the Merdeka Curriculum.
