Abstract

The objective of this research is to examine how an EFL learner learns English speaking through movies. This research used a narrative inquiry because it focused on exploring the personal experience of an undergraduate EFL student with outstanding English-speaking skills regarding her experience in using movies as a medium for learning English speaking. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews and photovoice. The interview questions focused on exploring ways and learning techniques applied in the learning process. Photovoice also provides active space for participant to directly convey her experiences. The data were analyzed using narrative analysis proposed by Labov (1972). The research results discovered that there is a series of lessons arranged in the process of English-speaking learning through movies. The learning series involves three learning activities that involve all aspects of speaking, namely (1) activities to acquire vocabulary and grammar using listening and analyzing technique; (2) pronunciation training activities using repetition drill technique; and (3) fluency training activities using shadowing technique. Keywords: EFL, speaking skill, learning medium, movies, narrative inquiry
