Abstract
This qualitative study aimed to explore the strategies used by Kampus Mengajar volunteers to motivate elementary school students to learn English. Focusing on 2 Kampus Mengajar volunteers, this study sought to gain an in-depth understanding of the motivational strategies used by Kampus Mengajar volunteers on elementary school students in Sumedang Regency and Banjar City, West Java, Indonesia. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews by adapting the Motivational Strategies score by Dornyei (2001) and analyzed using thematic analysis by Braun & Clarke (2008) to uncover the strategies used by Kampus Mengajar volunteers in motivating elementary students to learn English. The results show that volunteers motivate elementary students in ways that are grouped into two main themes: (1) creating a supportive learning environment through language adjustment, monitoring students' progress, utilizing game, various learning media, creating a conducive atmosphere, and relevant materials; and (2) supporting students' emotions in learning which includes encouraging students, appreciating students, self-acceptance, and promoting positive attitudes. Data analysis concluded that the Kampus Mengajar volunteers have successfully helped elementary students both cognitively and emotionally learn so that elementary students can be motivated to continue learning English. This research contributes to understanding effective student motivation strategies in English language learning at the elementary school level.
