Abstract
Character AI, one of the AI chatbot technology has been used by EFL learners to conduct their English language learning in informal context. They claim that by using Character AI, they become more enjoyable in learning English, more critical in communication, and also being helped in practicing written dialogue as well as the language structure. Seeing this phenomenon, this qualitative study aims to investigate the role of Character AI in English language learning among seventh grade learners at a junior high school in Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia. Utilizing a descriptive case study research design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with three participants who regularly used Character AI for their English language learning, and the result of interview were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings of this study revealed that the learners perceptions on the role of technology in their learning of English covers autonomous learning facilitator, language practice partner, and personalized learning tool. It is hoped this study could contribute to body knowledge of using Artificial intelligence and Chatbots in assisting English language learning.
