Abstract
Many students learning English as a foreign language often find it frustrating and complicated to learn spoken English. They are unfamiliar with spoken English, feel terrified to speak, and worry about making grammatical errors. At one of the universities in Indonesia, there is a course called Survival English that aims to help students improve their speaking skills. However, some students still face challenges in this course. This study investigates the challenges and opportunities students encountered in the Survival English course. Using a qualitative descriptive case study, the data was collected through semi-structured interviews with three students enrolled in the course. The data was analyzed using thematic analysis to answer the research questions. The study found that the students faced several challenges, including differences of opinion among group members, lack of vocabulary for speaking skills, and limited time to complete assignments. On the other hand, the students also experienced opportunities such as enhancing communication skills through social interaction and the advantages of collaborative learning. This research is grounded in Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, which examines the challenges and opportunities the students faced. Keywords: Challenges and Opportunities, Sociocultural, Survival English course
