Abstract

Online teaching and learning activities have spread in the last three decades since the 1990s. Until present, some educational institutions still carry out teaching and learning activities online, including the school where the researcher did Teaching Training (PLP). However, online learning activities cause several differences in terms of learning motivation. The use of online learning has different impacts on student learning motivation. Therefore, this research was conducted with the aim of finding out students' motivation to learn English when learning online. This research was conducted using qualitative methods, specifically case study research design by distributing questionnaires and semi-structured interviews to three students of class 12th at SMA Negeri Tasikmalaya, then the data was processed using thematic analysis. The findings show that online learning influences the students internally based on their needs, efforts, and understanding and external motivation based on the easiness, technical issues, flexibility and accessibility of online English learning, and the students’ admiration of others. However, the internet issues may disrupt their motivation to learn. Therefore, the further research may dig deeper into the ways to make the students still motivated to learn online.
