Abstract

This qualitative study aims to investigate the contributions of digital manga in the extensive reading context to EFL students’ vocabulary mastery. By focusing on two active, long-term manga readers, this study attempts to gain an in-depth and contextual understanding of the contributions that students gained from reading manga to their vocabulary knowledge ranging from word forms, meanings, and uses. Therefore, the Vocabulary Knowledge framework established by Nation (2013) was used as the foundation of this study. Furthermore, the data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) Thematic Analysis. The findings of this study revealed a range of manga contributions to vocabulary mastery: (1) Manga strengthens knowledge of word forms, including contributions in words memorization and derivative forms knowledge; (2) Manga facilitates the understanding of words’ meanings, including understanding word meanings and associations; (3) Manga facilitates the use of words, encompassing the knowledge of grammatical structures, collocations, word uses across formal and informal contexts, and enrich their diction in writing as well as communicating. This study concludes that manga is the contributing media for vocabulary mastery. The implication of this study is to suggest authentic materials, in this case manga, as alternative or complementary media for facilitating students’ vocabulary mastery that could be applied in the long run while cultivating and sustaining a love of reading. Keywords: Vocabulary mastery, extensive reading, digital manga.
