Abstract
Reading motivation is a necessary factor in successful literacy development and academic achievement. However, many students still have a lack of motivation to read books because some of them do not like reading physical books. Nowadays, when technology is a big part of all aspects, digital reading media has become an alternative for reading motivation, one of which is using Wattpad. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore the perceptions of EFL students who use Wattpad for reading motivation in extensive reading activities. The method used in this research is a descriptive case study. Participants consisted of three EFL students at one of the universities in Tasikmalaya. Research data was collected using semi-structured interviews. Data analysis uses thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). The research results show that there are two themes that are found in this research, namely positive perceptions and negative perceptions. Positive perceptions include: (1) accessible; (2) interesting reading materials; and (3) interactive; and (4) helping reading goals. Meanwhile, negative perception is the weaknesses of Wattpad, namely premium content and a lot of advertising content. In conclusion, using Wattpad in extensive reading activities is effective for building students’ reading motivation. Still, on the other hand, teachers must consider using Wattpad as a main digital learning medium because it has weaknesses such as premium content and a lot of advertising content which will reduce students' reading motivation.
