Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the factors contributing to phonological errors conducted by EFL university students. Phonological errors are a common issue among EFL university students, who often struggle with mastering the phonological aspects of the language. These errors, which involve incorrect pronunciation or deviations from standard norms, can significantly impede effective communication. The study used a case study method, including semi-structured interviews with three students of English department students at Siliiwangi University in Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia. The data were analyzed using Thematic Analysis, and four main themes were identified: interlanguage factors, intra-language factors, internal difficulties, and the learning environment. The research found that phonological errors occur for many reasons, leading to under-average scores and the need for retaking courses to improve scores. This research is based on the theory of error that is put forward by H. Douglas Brown. Brown stated that generally there are two types of error they are “Interlingual Transfer and Intralingual Transfer. By understanding the factors contributing to phonological errors, teachers can identify specific areas or sounds that may cause difficulties for students and develop tailored learning materials.
