Abstract

Working on the undergraduate thesis will most possibly become the first actual conduction of research for undergraduate students where the possibility of encountering many obstacles and difficulties might be presented, especially when it should be produced in English, as it is not their native tongue. For some students, the obstacles and difficulties in working on the undergraduate thesis might lower their motivation in accomplishing the undergraduate thesis writing. The students who performed in the study are feasibly recognized as motivated students since they accomplished their undergraduate thesis within six to seven months. They affirmed that a successful writing activity involves intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The present study is more focused on the exploration of both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in writing their undergraduate. Participants are two English Education students who completely accomplished their thesis with similar stages that have been decided. By utilizing a semi-structured interview of the case study in qualitative research, the participants involved in the face-to-face interview through an online meeting application, namely Zoom. The data gained were analyzed by using thematic analysis proposed by Braun & Clarke (2006). It shows five motivations, which are classified into two. There are: 1) intrinsic motivation includes “personal interest” and “awareness of the responsibility”, and 2) extrinsic motivation includes “desire to have a feasible job & achieve a further purpose”, “the desire to receive recognitions” and “avoiding threats”. Despite the different responses of the participants, their answers were relatively similar in certain notions. Keywords: students’ motivation, intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, undergraduate thesis writing
