Abstract
Oral corrective feedback is a significant component in second language learning as it guides learners toward more accurate and appropriate language use. Since students may have different perspectives on oral corrective feedback, this study attempts to reveal students’ perceptions of the teacher’s oral corrective feedback and their oral corrective feedback preferences. A qualitative case study was applied to conduct this study. Three students representing A1, A2, and B1 English proficiency levels from a multilevel English conversation class in Tasikmalaya were interviewed using a semi-structured approach, and the data collected were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings showed that students perceived oral corrective feedback as significant in English conversation classes, as it helps raise awareness of errors and improves their speaking skills. The study also found effective oral corrective feedback characteristics based on students’ views, such as clear and thorough feedback and positive delivery. Further, unfavorable aspects of the teacher’s oral corrective feedback delivery were also identified, including unclear feedback, negative emotion, lack of self-correction opportunities, and excessive correction. The multilevel students showed variations in oral corrective feedback preferences. Lower proficiency students (A1&A2) prefer immediate and reformulation feedback delivered in L1, while higher proficiency student (B1) prefers immediate and prompt feedback delivered in L2. The findings suggest that teachers should adjust oral corrective feedback techniques to their learners’ proficiency levels and provide feedback clearly and positively. Keywords: Student’s perception, student’s preference, oral corrective feedback, English proficiency level, English conversation class
