Abstract
English speaking in modern Islamic boarding schools is an obligation that students must carry out to communicate every day. However, there are challenges that students often encounter when speaking English. Even so, there are solutions that students use to face challenges when speaking English. This research aims to determine the challenges and solutions to students' problems in speaking English in modern Islamic boarding schools, which are used daily. This research was conducted at one of the Modern Islamic Boarding Schools in Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia. This research focuses on the phenomenon of students experiencing difficulties in the form of difficulty speaking English and the solutions used by students to face these challenges. This research uses a descriptive case study. Participants consisted of three students at a modern Islamic boarding school in Tasikmalaya. Data collection used thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke 2006). The research results show that students have challenges when speaking English, namely the presence of linguistic and psychological factors. The solutions that students use are using several types of sources, asking other people for help, and collaborating. Researchers categorized research findings into two themes consisting of four sub-themes. The sub-themes are; (1) Linguistic Factors; (2) Psychological barriers; (3) Using various sources; and (4) Seeking help and collaboration. Therefore, the researcher concluded that students have several challenges when speaking English in modern Islamic boarding schools and there are solutions that students use to face the challenges that students face. The implication of this research is to encourage further research on English language learning strategies appropriate to Islamic boarding schools' cultural context and values .
